Revol Greens Refocuses Efforts, Shutters California Facility

Revol Greens, a greenhouse producer of leafy greens, has issued a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) to the 42 remaining employees at its Tehachapi, Calif., facility. The company will officially cease operations this November, opting to reallocate its efforts and resources to its more profitable sites in Texas, Georgia, and Minnesota.
The California facility, which had already downsized its workforce from 142 to 42 employees in June 2024, grappled with the state’s high energy and labor costs while failing to meet local sales expectations. The facility is owned by Equilibrium Capital, the company’s key shareholder, and leased to Revol Greens. Dutch greenhouse operator FoodVentures joined the project in 2024 (at the request of Equilibrium) to help the company change course.
“California is an expensive place to grow anything because of the energy and labor costs,” Dirk Aleven, CEO of FoodVentures, said in an interview with AgFunder News. Aleven has also served as Revol Greens’ president since January 2025.
Under FoodVentures’ restructuring efforts, the company has substantially improved efficiency at its other locations. The Texas facility has achieved significant gains while reducing labor costs and producing higher yields from half the growing area. It has also slashed corporate costs by millions in a three-month period.
Equilibrium is now seeking buyers and renters for the 62-acre Tehachapi site, which includes 14 acres of high-tech lettuce production and 32 acres of semi-closed greenhouses designed for vine crops.
