Great Lakes Growers is planning a $5 million expansion at its facility in Burton, Ohio, to increase the company’s hydroponic production capacity, as reported by Cleveland.com and confirmed by the company.
The expansion plans include the construction of a new 50,000-square-foot greenhouse and power infrastructure upgrades that would allow for a maximum buildable footprint of 10 acres, contingent upon future expansion plans.
“The current expansion will add 30% additional greenhouse capacity for our customers,” says John Bonner, owner and CEO of Great Lakes Growers. “We are also doubling our cooler and packhouse footprint, which will give us the ability to keep up with the higher daily production levels both now and after all further expansion is complete at this site.”
With the expectation that the expansion will create 12 new jobs, the operation in Burton will employ an estimated 40 workers.
“We see opportunities in the marketplace for experienced greenhouse operators who prioritize quality, can produce at a reasonable cost, and deliver the goods on time, every time,” Bonner says. “Our customers are experiencing exceptional growth in the category, and we need to make sure we can support that growth. With this expansion, we have made the necessary investments to ensure our customers continue to be successful well into the future, and if they are successful, we think there’s a real good chance that we will be, too.”
